Abstract
The world is facing an acute water shortage. The current irrigation methods used in the Shardara region of Kazakhstan are not demand-oriented. This study was conducted to determine the Crop Water Requirement (CWR), Irrigation Water Requirement (IWR), and irrigation scheduling for the major crops grown in the Shardara region, using the CROPWAT model based on climatic, soil, and agricultural data.
The results of the study showed that the total annual precipitation in the region is 236.0 mm, of which the effective rainfall amounts to 58.2 mm. The total crop water requirement reached 1688.1 mm/decade, the net irrigation requirement was 1522.0 mm, and the gross irrigation requirement was 2174.3 mm, taking into account water conveyance losses. The monthly net irrigation requirements according to the scheme were 31.9, 108.8, 293.6, 482.7, 410.8, 247.2, and 113.0 mm in April, May, June, July, August, September, and October, respectively.
In addition, the flow rate of net irrigation demand was 0.11, 0.47, 1.24, 1.68, 0.94, 0.95, and 0.42 L/s/ha in April, May, June, July, August, September, and October, respectively. The CWR and IWR values were higher during the dry season due to high temperatures and low relative humidity. However, the IWR of each crop was low at the initial growth stage and increased to its peak during the full growth stage.
The study recommends the use of the CROPWAT model for accurate assessment of irrigation water requirements. Therefore, a crop irrigation water requirement planning model is crucial for the efficient use of water resources and for adapting to possible climate changes in the agricultural sector.
